The Making Studios Cardboard Furniture
We were invited by Skelly & Couch to contribute to the redevelopment of the Making Studio at the Life Science Centre - a space designed to flip the script on science education, encouraging visitors to become makers rather than just observers. With a focus on hands-on experimentation, invention, and collaboration, the redesigned studio called for flexible and sustainable furniture that could keep up with the energy of the space.
We were proud to contribute a bespoke suite of cardboard furniture that supports this vision in a number of ways:
Lightweight, flexible & modular: Our cardboard units are easy to move, reconfigure, or even remove as the needs of workshops evolve. Whether teams need a collaborative workbench, individual stations, or breakout surfaces, the furniture adapts.
Sustainability & material storytelling: Cardboard is recyclable, low‑impact, and can inspire questions about materials, manufacturing and reuse. It sends a message quietly but powerfully.
Design that works with the space: The furniture pieces were designed to slot in with the other spatial and mechanical systems installed by Skelly & Couch, so the furniture feels part of the studio, not an add‑on.
Acoustic and thermal comfort support: While the main structure had to be thermally & acoustically isolated from surrounding exhibition halls, our furniture contributes by being lightweight, softly edged, and less noisy under movement than rigid furnishings might have been, helping the overall ambient environment.
Working alongside the architectural and mechanical works the furniture helps bring to life a creative zone where imagination and practicality combine.
